The Republic of India is old (over 10,000 years), big (7th largest country in the world), with over 300 languages (Hindi and English most common) and eight major religions (80% Hindu & 13% Muslim). It is now one of the fastest growing economies in the world. This pluralistic, multiethnic society provides a cultural diversity which is very tolerant and exaggerates the senses of many western visitors.
